At Wassi Art, the process starts with the clay. The terracotta colour clay, dug by hand from the Blue Mountain ranges, is packed into rice bags and carried on heads across a swaying footbridge strung across a deep chasm. It is then taken by truck to Wassi Art. The first step is to soak the clay in drums. It is then strained and poured into plaster vats to remove the excess water. Next the clay is partially sun dried and kneaded into a smooth pliable roll.
From these lumps of clay, using potter wheels and experienced hands, our master potters pull extraordinary vessels of all shapes and sizes. The shaped clay now referred to as green ware is then cleaned to remove all imperfections.
The green ware is passed to our eager team of artists. Carving, brushing, cutting, and wielding their magic, the artists transform the lifeless green ware into breathtaking objects of beauty and joy. Enjoying artistic freedom in a production setting, they capture in brilliant colors the island's panorama of culture, flora and fauna. Each piece a unique work of art carries the spirit and signature of the artist.
Leaving the artist, the decorated ware goes to the kiln room, for a week or two of glazing, firing and cooling. Finally, the finished ware goes to the showroom for display and sale.
Wassi Art ships worldwide or packs in convenient carry on box. Now comes the hard part.....Which ones to choose! They are all gorgeous!
